Ah, the sewing bag. It can be as jumbled and random as our purses. We are able to pull anything out of it we need and then sometimes not find anything we need. As a mom, it can be a catch-all for everything my daughter brings me that she randomly finds.
Since I’m a mom, I have an extra small diaper bag. This became my new sewing bag. It has lots of pockets and a large center part that has plenty of room for at least 2 skeins of yarn and my current project.
What do I keep in my sewing bag, you ask? Well … That can vary somewhat from project to project, but most of the essentials stay the same.
First, in the side pocket are all my hooks. I can just grab any hook I need without having to dig through to the bottom of the bag. Also, it helps with the quick put-up for when my daughter wants to cuddle. I don’t have to worry about grabbing a pouch, unzipping it, or un-buttoning it to put my hook up while she’s trying with all her might to quickly crawl into my lap.
Next, and this is really optional, but it helps me a lot, I keep a pair of nail clippers and a nail file. We all know the horror of discovering we have a hangnail and how frustrating it is when it gets snagged on our work or on our working yarn. Then we have to (as a mom of a 19-month-old-grabby-hands baby) put up all the sewing, get up, and go get the clippers and file. I find it is a lot easier if I keep these in my sewing bag so that I can take care of it on the spot and continue with my work almost without skipping a beat.
In the pocket opposite my hook pocket, I keep pencils and pens in a couple of different colors to take notes for patterns or for creating my patterns.
I also keep a wheel of assorted sewing needles and a small pair of scissors in the bottle-carrying-pouch that came with the diaper bag. It has a zipper in it that keeps her out and keeps the sharps in.
There is something that my nana taught me that some may think is strange but works wonders for me. I keep little yarn scraps in my sewing bag, like ones that are too small to do anything with. My nana showed me that by keeping these little scraps if u make a little amigurumi project, you can use these little pieces to stuff it. It’s not conventional but it works.
Now along with those items, I keep some basic stuff that pretty much explains themselves like a tape measure and stitch markers.
Once a week or so I have to clear out my sewing bag. Nothing stays organized for me, so I have to make sure that I put things back in the right pockets and make sure that only the yarn that I’m using for my current project is in the bag. Sometimes little balls from my last project linger at the bottom under my current work in progress otherwise.
So that’s what I keep in my crochet bag. I hope this helps you keep the things that you need right by your side. What do you keep in your crochet bag? Let me know in the comments below. And have a happy hippo day!
