Yarn stash sizes can vary. Some have 100’s of skeins of yarn in every shade and yarn thickness but don’t be intimated. Small yarn stashes are very effective.
There are a few items to keep in your stash that will let you crochet pretty much anything. The basic is worsted weight yarn. The main colors you need to keep in large skeins are red, blue, yellow, brown, green. I’d also say keep at least 2 large black and 2 large white skeins, as well. Now with that being said let’s say you have a project you are wanting to do like a granny square throw, maybe you want to get started on it but are waiting on an online order or waiting to get paid.
These basic colors I’ve pointed out should get you started. In addition to these colors, you may want to add a couple of your favorite colors. If you know you’re going to be working on a lot of baby blankets, then get these colors in baby yarn.
There are many things that yarn can be made from. Acrylic yarn is the most common yarn out there. It’s good for making many things like blankets, baskets, amigurumi (that’s those cute little animals u see crochet. More on those in another blog), beanie hats, things like that. It can be very warm and airy if u need it to be. Acrylic is very versatile. Cotton yarn can be used, too, but in my experience acrylic yarn is great for those things.
Cotton yarn I believe are more commonly used in kitchen things like potholders, placemats, koozies, and coasters. This is because acrylic yarn can melt at high temperatures like setting a hot pan on it cotton will not. A Cotton koozie or coaster will absorb condensation from a cold can or glass faster and better than acrylic. Cotton yarn also tends to feel softer.
Wool has many of the same applications of both acrylic and cotton. It’s very absorbent and warm but the problem most people come by is they are allergic to it. Even crocheting with it can cause a reaction.
Just a note: On the side of the skein of yarn you’ll find the suggested hook size to get the best stitches. I hope this was helpful. Please follow and leave a comment of any suggestions or questions. Just remember to have fun and have a Happy Hippo Day.
